We've installed backup generators at home. The power goes out plenty, but it is the week long outages that raise havoc with our properties.

My late Father-in-Law traveled the world supporting large scale UPS installations. Always fascinated me, as literally millions were spent to "keep the lights on."

Back to the domestic situation, I am using small battery-UPS units to bridge the brief power interruptions when the system switches to backup generator and back. On their own I don't think I have enough battery to bridge a day, so it is more about protection from switching than another later of UPS protection.

... If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting?

I have friends with Tesla Powerwalls, live in an area with occasional
multi-day outages. My solution is a bit more MacGyverish.

I have a carport with my kitchen on the other side of the wall. I'll
run a 1200 watt inverter from my car, preiously a plug-in Prius, now a
Lexus ES 300h - and run a long extension cord through my front door to
the kitchen. Plug the refrigerator into it to keep it running every 2-3
    hours.

I have a gas tankless water heater, it just needs AC for spark - and it's
in the carport next to the car/inverter.

The car just starts up automatically to keep the battery charged, then
    shuts off when done.

I have gas heat and a gas stove, so cooking and staying warm isn't an
issue. A propane barbecue, just in case.

The last time we had an outage, the BBS was running on a laptop. I
brought it to a starbucks and transferred mail from my feeds and crash
    polled my downlinks from Starbucks.

Not bad for simply a heavy-guage extension cord and a $50 inverter.

Well I do have one small one but it only power the micro server with PFSense and the Wireless AP to keep the Internet on through the little blips now and then. In MN we have been lucky. Its not horrible here even though we have above ground power.

I wouldn't spend that much I will just deal with rebooting the world afterwards

I was loath to invest in a Powerwall unless located away from the house.

In most cases a Powerwall is sized top cover 12-18 hours of full load power outages. That isn't enough as my last outage was nearly 150 hours, as freezing temps.

Of course this happened while I was traveling overseas. Adding that the entire island's internet was also down, the damages were done about day 3 of the outage.

A Powerwall is projected to be usable for 10-15 years before you have to recycle it, BTW.

I had McGyveresque setups, but they needed my participation to work.

I wanted the backups to work for the wife easily, as at home our system required a manual switch-over and start, and the island house was even more convoluted.

Here is the house setup: https://k9zw.wordpress.com/2024/01/07/powered-up-new-genset-for-the-main-k9zw-q th/

Here is the island setup: https://k9zw.wordpress.com/2025/05/25/keeping-the-power-on-washington-island-qt h-backup-generator/

The house setup still has some teething issues where the island is 100% good to go.
